BUT SERIOUSLY FOLKS...

Associated Press
JERUSALEM — Filmmakers and researchers on Monday unveiled two ancient stone boxes they said may have once contained the remains of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, but several scholars derided the claims made in a new documentary as unfounded and contradictory to basic Christian beliefs.

"The Lost Tomb of Jesus," produced by Oscar-winning director James Cameron and scheduled to air March 4 on the Discovery Channel, argues that 10 small caskets discovered in 1980 in a Jerusalem suburb may have held the bones of Jesus and his family.

One of the caskets even bears the title, "Judah, son of Jesus," hinting that Jesus may have had a son, according to the film.

"There's a definite sense that you have to pinch yourself," Cameron said Monday at a news conference. In an earlier television interview, he said that statisticians found "in the range of a couple of million to one" in favor of the documentary's conclusions about the caskets, or ossuaries.

Simcha Jacobovici, the Toronto filmmaker who directed the film, said that a name on one of the ossuaries — "Mariamene" — offers evidence that the tomb is that of Jesus and his family. In early Christian texts, "Mariamene" is the name of Mary Magdalene, he said.

The very fact that Jesus had an ossuary would contradict the Christian belief that he was resurrected and ascended to heaven.

Most Christians believe Jesus' body spent three days at the site of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem's Old City. The burial site identified in Cameron's documentary is in a southern Jerusalem neighborhood nowhere near the church.

In 1996, when the British Broadcasting Corp. aired a short documentary on the same subject, archaeologists challenged the claims. Amos Kloner, the first archaeologist to examine the site, said the idea fails to hold up by archaeological standards but makes for profitable television.

"They just want to get money for it," Kloner said.

Shimon Gibson, one of three archaeologists who first discovered the tomb in 1980, said Monday of the film's claims: "I'm skeptical, but that's the way I am. I'm willing to accept the possibility."

The film's claims, however, have raised the ire of Christian leaders in the Holy Land.

Stephen Pfann, a biblical scholar at the University of the Holy Land in Jerusalem who was interviewed in the documentary, said the film's hypothesis holds little weight.

"I don't think that Christians are going to buy into this," Pfann said. "But skeptics, in general, would like to see something that pokes holes into the story that so many people hold dear."

"How possible is it?" Pfann said. "On a scale of one through 10 — 10 being completely possible — it's probably a one, maybe a one and a half."

Pfann is even unsure that the name "Jesus" on the caskets was read correctly. He thinks it's more likely the name "Hanun." Ancient Semitic script is notoriously difficult to decipher.

Kloner also said the filmmakers' assertions are false. "The names on the caskets are the most common names found among Jews at the time," he said.

William Dever, an expert on near eastern archaeology and anthropology, who has worked with Israeli archeologists for five decades, said specialists have known about the ossuaries for years.

"The fact that it's been ignored tells you something," said Dever, professor emeritus at the University of Arizona. "It would be amusing if it didn't mislead so many people."

Osnat Goaz, a spokeswoman for the Israeli government agency responsible for archaeology, said the Antiquities Authority agreed to send two ossuaries to New York, but they did not contain human remains. "We agreed to send the ossuaries, but it doesn't mean that we agree with" the filmmakers, she said.

MUCH NEEDED REST

I finished the presentation and paper this morning at about 4am.

Went to class and did all that jazz.

Now, I'm resting this weekend. Going to Dallas with Allen tomorrow - gonna raid the Half-Price Bookstores in an effort to expand our respective libraries. It'll be great to get away from papers and projects.

Sweet.

THE THEOLOGY OF MUSIC

I don't like Christian radio much. Yes, I write and sing "Christian" music and yes, I do get airplay on the radio. And at the risk of sounding like I'm biting the hand that feeds me, I feel this needs to be said. Besides, my music does not pander to radio playlists and therefore, I won't censor my words.

I feel that the theology of much of the music on "Christian" radio has deep problems. (Now I used the term "Christian" radio with its common usage, although I've got issues with the label "Christian" as an adjective). As I drove to the gym tonight, a song came on a popular radio station about Hell. The song was happy and joyful, and a playful reminder of the conditions of Hell. The implied message, from what I understand, is to get people to become Christians by joking about Hell.

Now, I don't believe that Hell is the central message of the gospel, discipleship is. And discipleship is chosen as a vocation, not forced upon anyone through fear or other means. But that isn't really my problem here, that's a debate for another post. My issue is the joking about it, the playful nature of the issue of salvation. The song was a popular one, by a very popular band who've done world tours many times over.

My question is: Why? Why is this the message that Christians are broadcasting over their airwaves. I try to be honest in my music, and I appreciate honesty in the music and artists that I listen to. And I believe it is honesty that the larger world needs and desires, not happy music about serious issues and doctrines.

Maybe I'm just griping. Maybe I'm just complaining. But since I'm not on the sidelines, but instead in the game, playing, I feel that my concerns are valid. The theology and approach behind the music played on Christian radio is not always beneficial to the Kingdom and I think that we should be more aware about what message we are putting out there, and more imporantly why we are putting that message out there.

BATTLE OF THE SEXES: AGE 8

"Isn't that right, Jonathan?" he asked me.

"Is what right?" I inquired.

"That girls to go Jupiter to get more stupider!" he began to chant.

"Girls aren't stupid." I said. "I know plenty of girls who are a whole lot smarter than me."

"Really?!! Who?!!! Name one!!!!" he demanded.

I proceeded to explain about the many women I love and care for, who are all in fact smarter than me. If men are actually supposed to be smarter than women, as many boys are conditioned to think, then why haven't us guys been able to figure yall ladies out. All those times we're in trouble and don't know why.... exactly: men are not smarter than women.

I also explained that, "more stupider," is not grammatically correct, and if one wishes to label someone else as being, "more stupid," then he should at least show intelligence in doing so.

Tonight was Kids Night Out again. And yes, ladies, I stood up for you.

NEW CAR

I've finally got a new-to-me car. It's a dodge neon, quite a bit more "conservative" than the Jeep, but I like it! Filled up on $17 too! Woot! Woot!

DOES GOD TAKE SIDES?

Does God pick a side and back it when humans are in conflict with one another? Some say yes. Some say it's hard to answer no. Take World War II for example. Many people believe that God was on the side of the Allies. Many believe that the Allied defeat of Adolf Hitler and the Axis powers were at least influenced by God ensuring good in the world. Many would also say that further evidence of God's hand in the Allied victory in World War II was shown when the end result was the creation of a nation-state of Israel.

Convincing arguments, perhaps, of God intervening in a conflict, picking one side over the other, and influencing the outcome. But then there's the other side - people who question the level of providence with which God acts. There are two sides to every conflict - each believing that the other is wrong and they are right - believing this so passionately that there would be no conflict otherwise. I can make a moral judgment based on my cultural values or religious values, but those are my judgments to which one can negate my his or her respective values.

So, back to the question: Does God take sides? In the case of World War II, it's easy to say yes because we (the United States) won. And we believe freedom is a good thing. But as with the case of Islamic fundamentalism, everyone believes God is on their side. So, does the side supported by God win? Is that how we know?

Or does God simply look at us, and be with us, and be saddened by the fact that people wage war on one another? Or does what he can to minimize the damage?

Does he adamantly intervene for a cause that he supports? Or does God just shake his head and keep asking himself why can't we just get along?

FUNNIEST POSTS: PART 1

This was one of the funniest posts of the Cruz-Control over the past year, in my opinion. It was published 285 days ago on April 28, 2006. It actually isn't a post per se, but a link. Anyways I still think its hilarious! Enjoy!!

WOW!

That's all I can say. Or I can say that SOMETIMES CHRISTIANS JUST SCARE ME!

This is an absolute hoot! This is an actual voicemail to a pastor from a man who visited a church. To listen CLICK HERE. Enjoy!

P.S. My Bible doesn't have a 1st Acts - I must have a defective Bible!

RANDOM FACT OF THE WEEK

So I'm researching the history and origins of baptism. It was done long before John baptizing Jesus in the Jordan. So my question is what did baptism mean, and how frequent was it in Jesus' Jewish context. I'll let you known what I find.

But I came across this interesting fact in my research. In the New Testament Early Church baptism was done naked. New converts to Christianity disrobed themselves for baptism. Getting naked was symbolic of getting rid of the old life completely.

This practice of naked baptisms has been dropped since NT times. And Baptists usually insist on being as close and real to the NT baptism as possible; this is why Baptists practice immersion. Think they'll bring this one back??

THE SMOKING GUN

I may have gotten a little further along in the car search - pray for that, it's really stressing me.

So, I went to get some of the best Bar-B-Q in Waco at Michna's. They have this bar-b-q pit (pictured here) that is shaped like a gun. When they cater, they will hall this over to your party or whatever and cook inside of it. The smoke comes out of the front of the gun. Cool, huh?

And the Bar-B-Q is excellent. They're on Franklin Ave. here in Waco, stop by and grab some great Bar-B-Q. They're cheap too.

CLASSES AGAIN

I'm finally back into the full swing of things with classes and all. I've been off and on with school over the past week and a half, but now everything's back to normal. It's funny because tests are going on, etc. So, I'm rescheduling many of them for later so that I can caught up on lecture material and stuff.

Still looking for a car. I test drove a Dodge Neon last night. It was kept pretty clean and stuff, but when I turned it on it started rumbling and groaning. I thought the engine would shake itself out from under the hood. I asked the dealer what was up with it. He said he didn't know.

So, I guess I'll keep looking.

LET'S MAKE A DEAL

Used Car Salesmen are the bane of my existence.... OK wait a minute, I'm getting ahead of myself.

So, I'm trying to find another car. I miss my 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport terribly, but we must bury the past in the past and move on, right?

So, I'm looking for a car.

And it's the same story with every car dealer I've visited.

"Hello!!! Are we looking for a car today?!!!" Mr. Salesperson asks.

No, we aren't looking for anything. I am looking for an new auto. I say to myself.

"Well, today's your lucky day."

No, it really isn't. I was my lucky day at the last three car dealers I visited. And so, it's not my lucky day here because, well, I just never get that lucky.

"We're running a special today on that very car you've been looking at."

No, you're not.

"I'll make you a really good deal on the price!!!"

No, you won't. You need to make a buck, and I need a new car, so lets just cut the mustard and get down to business. You won't make me a deal on anything. So, just quit trying to sucker me and let's talk hard numbers.

But see, that's the problem, very few car dealers want to talk about a definite asking price upfront. Most want me to test drive, and fall in love with a car and go to the wedding before even finding out the last name, metaphorically speaking of course.

They want me to get all happy about the car and then "go inside to do the paperwork" and everything before I even get a definite price on what I'd be paying. Seriously. I'm not stupid. I'm not going to buy a car without knowing how much it costs beforehand.

But this is the story I get at dealer after dealer.

I've got a headache.

I'm test driving at least two cars tomorrow; I did three today.

Maybe I should just buy a bright red sportcoat and go up to the salesmen and freak them out. It'd be like the time I went through a haunted house and ran up to and yelled at the goblins before they could come up and scare me. I freaked them out pretty bad. I thought it was funny.

NOTE: If you are a used car salesmen, Jonathan does not mean to defame you, your name, or your business. Unless you were among those who were trying to sucker him into paying a highly inflated price for a car that will break in a week, in which case Jonathan meant every word. Otherwise, give Jonathan a call... 'cause he still needs a car. Jonathan also reserves the right to speak in the third person.

I WILL LIFT MY EYES

This weekend, we had our Disciple Now, a weekend of worship and community for our youth. I'm just soooo tired...

After my accident last Saturday, I've begun to rethink many things in my life. First is love. Love is powerful. Love is rare, true love. Love is such an amazing thing. I do not believe that love is an emotion, although it is partly that. Instead, love is something we do, and something that happens. "There's never a rational explanation for falling in love." was the sentence that was just said on the TV as I'm typing this (strange, huh??).

I have begun to see relationships in my life that are bound solidly by love. And I have begun to acknowledge and voice my love for others. I verbally express my love for friends and family while I'm alive and have the chance.

The Sunday after the accident, I walked into church with my guitar to lead worship. I had to; I had no choice but to worship. I plugged in my guitar and we sang. I don't worship like I did a week and a half ago. I have so much more respect, reverence, and fear. We sang, "I Will Lift My Eyes."

God, my God, I cry out
Your beloved needs you now
God be near, calm my fear
Your kindness is what pulls me up
Your love is all that draws me in

I will lift my eyes
to the maker of the mountains I can't climb
I will lift my eyes
to the calmer of the oceans raging wild
I will lift my eyes
to the healer of the hurt I hold inside
I will lift my eyes, lift my eyes
To you

I had planned to go this song for worship the past several weeks, but for one reason or another, we never did (one week we had to cancel services because of the weather). So, the day after my accident, I found myself singing a song that meant more to me than it had ever meant before.

The first time we sang this song in worship was beautiful. It has come to mean more to me since then...

See, I have a problem with pride; I'm seeing that more everyday. I have a hard time accepting service from others. But I'm a sinner, and I'm not perfect. I have issues. While, I've never believed that I had it all panned out, I have begun to see that crying out for help to others and to God is the picture of humility. I'm so used to serving and offering counsel, I find myself struggling to cry out for help.

But now I cry to God. I will lift my eyes to the hills, where my help comes from. God has always rescued. He always saves - even, and maybe especially, a sinner like me.

I find myself struggling with reconciling the emotions I feel about someone leaving me for dead on a roadway with the love of enemies and the pacifism I preach and espouse so passionately on this blog, and what I believe is the New Testament's picture of witness and forgiveness.

I struggle. I sin. I'm trying to just figure this Christianity thing out.

But I am not there yet. So, I lift my eyes to the hills, where God will come, providing me with all the grace and mercy I need, and then some.

God runs to his children. It's like the story of the Prodigal Son, or more accurately, the Willing -to-be-humiliated-by-running Father. God, the all-powerful creator of the universe, is willing to run to me, to pick me up and hold my in his arms. To love me, even with all my issues.

I have nothing to fear, my running to God. I have nothing to fear, by crying to him and crawling in his arms. He will not reject or turn me away. Instead he will cherish it. Because, though I am a sinner, I want to me with and near him.

But my help is coming. And he is love, grace, and mercy.

Amen and amen.

JESUS IS 90 YEARS OLD

Jesus has grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Jesus' son died when he was 19.

Jesus lives in each of us. And this was made obvious and apparent to me tonight.

I saw Jesus tonight in the love, prayers, and gifts of my church family. I got so many wonderful hugs and kisses from so many great people. And I cherish every one of them.

This love is who Jesus is and was. And when the body of Christ loves like Jesus; we become a picture of Jesus on earth - a clear, real picture that others see.

I did not have insurance on my car (only liability as required by Texas law), which means that because the other guy was not caught, I am not reimbursed the value of my car. So, I'm pretty much without any wheels.

My church family, or better simply: my family, has found this out and several people tonight graciously and lovingly slipped me some checks. Several people in the Church have taken it onto themselves to help me financially in getting another car.

I can't even begin to express my gratitude. I was told tonight by a man I greatly respect to accept any and all help I was offered and that otherwise I'd be robbing others of a blessing. I realized the truth he had spoken. Pride can get in the way of receiving a blessing just as much as it can get in the way of giving one. So, I've swallowed my pride, and I've been so incredibly thankful to have so many people love and care for me.

I saw Jesus tonight in the love, prayers, and gifts of people in the Church. And it was beautiful and amazing.

God is good... all the time. Amen and amen.

ANGER & FORGIVENESS

I've gone through several stages, emotionally, in my recovery from this weekend's accident. One of the issues I've had to deal with is anger.

The accident was a hit-and-run. The person who sent my SUV rolling on a bridge, and presumably left me for dead was never found. He or she didn't stop.

Ironically, I don't think I'd be as calm about this if I knew who it was. If I knew who it was, I'd be very angry, as opposed to just angry. Because then I could point a finger (I won't say which one) at the face of someone who didn't care if I lived or died. I could understand exactly what inebriated the driver of the other vehicle and I could ask why was the other driver so wreckless against me. And why they didn't stop???!!!

I've struggled with the idea that someone would see my car roll several times, and leave me for dead, as there was no way of anticipating my survival from such an accident.

But I can deal more easily with this amorphous figure of 'somone' as opposed to someone specific. And I'm still angry.

But we bless those who hurt us and love those who curse us. We don't respond in violence or even anger, but in submission and humility. We forgive. I'm not quite there yet; but I'm desperately working on it.

And honestly, I'm so thankful to be alive, it really has overshadowed what negative feelings I'm experiencing about the accident.

But that's just a part of being human - and alive, I suppose.
